Ingredients:
- 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine – no need to splurge on anything pricey, boxed wine or a large bottle of red will do nicely for a larger batch. Fruity/full-bodied wine withstand heat best and the flavor is bold enough to complement the aromatics in the recipe. Look for a bottle of red Zinfandel, Merlot or Grenache.
- ¼ cup Cointreau
- 1 orange – sliced into rounds (peel the orange first for a less bitter taste)
- 1 orange – sliced with the skin left on for garnish
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Additional cinnamon sticks can be used when serving for garnish as well.
- ½ cup CF American Elderberry Juice
Instructions:
- Add wine, Cointreau, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon and CF American Elderberry Juice to a large saucepan. Stir briefly to combine
- Cook the mulled wine on medium-high heat until it barely reaches a simmer. (Avoid letting it boil as that will cook off the alcohol.)
- Reduce heat to low, cover and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
- This recipe can also be made in the crockpot, just monitor it, as each crockpot has a different “low” setting.
- Strain off the fruit/spices when serving, but garnish with a fresh apple and orange slice cinnamon stick spear.
